Qatar-Turkey Supreme Strategic Committee meets next month


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Doha: Qatar-Turkey Supreme Strategic Committee will hold its 6th meeting on November 26 in Turkey during which a number of new agreements are expected to be signed between the two countries, said H E Mehmet Mustafa Göksu, Ambassador of Turkey to Qatar.

'So far, Qatar-Turkey Supreme Strategic Committee have held five meetings and signed 50 agreements, said the Turkish Ambassador while addressing a press conference yesterday on the occasion of the 97th anniversary of the Republic of Turkey which is being marked today (October 29).  

The Ambassador said: 'After years of harmony, the Qatar-Turkey Supreme Strategic Committee was established in 2014, and the political and security ties between Qatar and Turkey also reflected in their economies. He said that H H the Amir of Qatar and H E the Turkish President had over 28 meetings since 2014 which reflects nature of strategic ties between the two countries.

The Ambassador said that economic and trade cooperation between the two countries has increased, as the volume of bilateral trade exchange jumped from $340m in 2010 to over $2bn in 2019, and the COVID-19 outbreak had only a limited impact on trade between the two countries.

'I take this opportunity to congratulate Qatari people for completing a large number of 2022 FIFA World Cup facilities ahead of schedule. We are pleased with the contribution of Turkish construction companies to infrastructure projects in Qatar, whose value since 2002 has amounted to more than $18bn, as 535 Turkish companies operate in Qatar in various fields.

He said Turkey is considered a safe haven for Qatari investments, which amounted to over $22bn. He said more than 179 Qatari companies are operating in Turkey.

To a question, he said Turkish and Qatari companies were planning joint ventures in other countries. He also said that Turkish exports faced a little impact of COVID-19 pandemic. 'As you know, I assumed my duties as Ambassador of Turkey to Qatar on August 12, 2020 after submitting my credentials to Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. It is a real honour for me to serve in this sister country, which has a unique relationship with Turkey.

He said the relationship that connects the two countries is strong and strategic, and innovative strategies must be developed to strengthen this wonderful partnership in light of remarkable development that the Qatari-Turkish bilateral relations have witnessed in recent years. 'We are keen to strengthen the people-to-people relations between the two countries, as the size of Qatar in the heart of the Turkish people is much greater than its geographical size, and love and friendliness continue thanks to the leadership of the two countries and the friendship of the two dear peoples.

He said Qatar won the world's respect by its work to achieve peace in conflict areas, and is distinguished by its eagerness to bridge the rifts, resolve differences and disputes by peaceful means and remain at one distance from all parties in honest mediation that enjoys great reliability.

'We highly appreciate these efforts, which confirm that Qatar carries great diplomatic, economic and humanitarian weight, said the Ambassador.

He said Turkey and Qatar were and are still strategic partners cooperating on many issues at the bilateral, regional and international levels for years. 'Our bilateral relations have witnessed remarkable progress in recent years in all fields. We affirm that the Turkish-Qatari relations are historical since the end of the nineteenth century, and they continued to develop even after the establishment of the Turkish Republic. 

The Ambassador said these relations witnessed a qualitative leap now, due to the historical fraternal relations and the common interests between the two brotherly peoples. The Ambassador said the foreign policies of Turkey and Qatar share the same principles in terms of activating mediation, diplomacy and dialogue efforts to resolve disputes.
