Uche Isiugo-Abanihe


(MENAFN- The Conversation) Prof Uche Isiugo-Abanihe was educated at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York (AB, 1977; MPS, 1978) and the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, USA (MA, 1980; PhD, 1983). He worked briefly as a Research Associate at the World Bank and the Population Studies Center, University of Pennsylvania between 1983 and 1985. He joined the University of Ibadan in October 1985 as a Lecturer in demography in the Department of Sociology and rose to the rank of Professor in 1997. He became the Head of the Department of Sociology, University of Ibadan in 1997-1999 and 2003-2007; and was elected Dean, Faculty of the Social Sciences, University of Ibadan, 2007-2009. He has produced 22 doctoral students at the University of Ibadan, nine of whom are now Professors in different universities in the country. He was Visiting Research Demographer, United Nations Regional Institute for Population Studies (UNRIPS), University of Ghana (1990-2000), and Visiting Professor of Sociology, Niger Delta University, Wilberforce Island, Bayelsa State, 2010-2012.

He has consulted for several national and international organizations in the areas of population research and training, Census, demographic interrelationships, policy issues, programme implementation, and monitoring and evaluation. He was Editor-in-Chief, The Nigerian Journal of Sociology and Anthropology, published by the Nigerian Anthropological and Sociological Association, 2007-2014, Ibadan Journal of the Social Sciences, published by the Faculty of the Social Sciences, 2003-2006; African Population Studies, Journal of the Union of African Population Studies, 2000-2007. With more than 120 publications to his credit, he has published extensively in the areas of fertility, nuptiality, migration, reproductive health and other related areas. He is honoured by the Union for African Population Studies (UAPS) with the Award of Excellence in Research and Training in African Demography, 2015. He has been the Vice Chancellor of Paul University, Awka since January 2015.
