(MENAFN- Khaama Press) DOHA, Qatar – Secretary General of NATO Jens Stoltenberg says the current peace negotiations 'offers the best chance' for peace in Afghanistan, but the Taliban 'must keep their promise' and deescalate ongoing offensive throughout the country.
In a meeting with United States Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad in Doha Thursday, Stoltenberg assured NATO's support to ongoing peace process and stability in the country.
'The Doha talks offer the best chance for peace, but Taliban must keep their promises and reduce the unacceptable level of violence,' he said in a tweet . ' #NATO remains committed to #Afghanistan 's security.'
Following a meeting with the Taliban, Khalilzad said they have agreed 'to re-set actions by strictly adhering to implementation of all elements of the U.S.-Taliban Agreement and all commitments made.'
But the Taliban did not immediately confirm on their agreement with the US envoy.
'At present too many Afghans are dying. With the re-set, we expect that number to drop significantly,' Khalilzad elaborated . 'We will do our part and will monitor implementation actively. All parties must deliver on their responsibilities.'
More recently, the Taliban has intensified offensive throughout Afghanistan – mainly in Helmand province – where some 6,000 families have been displaced.
Local and international allies believe, the ongoing violence is in controversy to the peace deal, threatening the process.
