(MENAFN- Daily Outlook Afghanistan) KABUL - Afghanistan, the United States and Turkmenistan have urged regional countries to support the Afghan peace negotiations in Doha.
At a meeting, representatives of the three nations asked regional all states to ensure that the intra-Afghan dialogue strengthened a united, sovereign, democratic and prosperous Afghanistan at peace with itself and the region.
The trilateral meeting was co-chaired by US Under-Secretary of State for Political Affairs David Hale, Afghan Foreign Minister Haneef Atmar and his Tajik counterpart Rashid Meredov.
The participants called for preserving and building upon the gains in democratisation and human rights made by Afghans over the past 19 years as a necessary condition for sustainable peace.
They reaffirmed their commitment to engage in greater joint cooperation in support of regional security, economic growth and development.
In a statement from the State Department, they vowed to improve security cooperation and intensify joint efforts to combat cross-border threats and to address issues such as terrorism, drug trafficking, smuggling and irregular migration.
The participants vowed to identify and support opportunities to increase people-to-people ties between Afghanistan, Turkmenistan and the US.
Additionally, the three nations agreed to promote women's meaningful inclusion, participation and protection across all of the work they did to advance peace, security and economic growth in the region.
They promised enhanced cooperation in utilising and improving the Lapis Lazuli Corridor and in identifying other transportation projects on which Afghanistan, Turkmenistan and the US could work together to boost trade in the region.
They agreed to support projects promoting regional connectivity by enhancing cooperation on construction and extension of transportation networks connecting Central Asia to South Asia via Afghanistan
The statement said the three sides would work together to identify and implement infrastructure plans, including projects for the sharing of energy resources such as the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan (TAP) power project and the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline scheme.
Women's equality and economic empowerment will also be promoted so that they can serve as drivers of the response to and recovery from the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic. (Pajhwok)
