The cultural and artistic scene in Qatar: Rooted creativity and outstanding presence

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Doha: Fine artists enjoy special attention and care in the State of Qatar, as there are many institutions concerned with the arts, ranging from academic institutions, cultural and social institutions, and others, aiming to prepare a new generation of Qatari fine artists to have their place on the local and international scene in the field of fine arts.

The most important state institutions which are concerned with sponsoring fine artists in the State of Qatar are Qatar Museums, the Ministry of Culture and Sports, the Cultural Village Foundation Katara and Qatar Fine Arts Society, in addition to a number of academic and private institutions, whose efforts are all combined to consolidate the presence of the Qatari Fine art on the global art scene.

Qatar Museums announced that the United States of America will be the official partner nation of the State of Qatar for the 2021 Year of Culture. A cooperative agreement was signed between the State of Qatar and the United States of America during the 2020 Qatar-United States Strategic Dialogue in Washington, D.C.

The Qatar-USA 2021 Year of Culture is intended to enhance cultural and artistic exchange and exemplifies the renewed commitment of the two nations to foster mutual understanding and promote intercultural dialogue. The specially curated 2021 Year of Culture will feature a wide-ranging program of exhibitions, festivals, bilateral exchanges, and events to be held in both nations.

The Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of Qatar Museums, H E Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad Al-Thani said: 'We inaugurated the Year of Culture program in celebrating Qatar's successful bid to host the World Cup in 2022. We started our program in 2012 celebrating Qatar-Japan's 40 years of bilateral relations. We continued to celebrate cities hosting the World Cup, with Brazil in 2014 and Russia in 2018. The year long program celebrates two nations and the diversity of its people and cultures. Today it brings me great pleasure to announce that 2021 will be the Year of Culture between Qatar-USA.

'Qatar will host the next World Cup in 2022 and the USA will bring the next version to its grounds in 2026. Culture goes beyond the arts, it's a measure of lifestyle that extends to all areas of life. We celebrate culture, sports, business, education, music and much more. I look forward to working on building on the existing strong relationship between our nations, and explore new opportunities together, she added.

The Qatar-USA 2021 Year of Culture is based on the long-standing diplomatic relations established between the two countries in 1972. Since then, the Qatari-US relations have continuously developed on several levels: political, military, economic, health, cultural and educational. The Qatari-US relations, which are based on trust, serve the interests of the two countries, as well as the public interest in achieving global and regional peace.
Qatar Museums are considered one of the most important institutions incubating fine art creativity. Since its inception, the institution seeks to be a cultural instigator for a new generation of creators, and for making the State of Qatar the origin and source of artistic, cultural and heritage experiences.

In order to realize these goals, Qatar Museums identified three strategic priorities: First, Taking Museums Beyond Four Walls - taking the cultural experience beyond the four walls of a museum into the world at large so that more people can take part. Second: Nurturing Emerging Talent - creating the conditions for creativity and cultivating new talent, inspiring the next generation of cultural producers. Third: Creating a Platform for the Voice of Qatar - taking the distinctive place within global debates on culture and creativity, having Qatar's own cultural message, and highlighting its stars.

Meanwhile, the Cultural Village Foundation Katara emerged to be a world-class cultural and artistic landmark, Al Mulla added, stressing that all these efforts from the various institutions accelerate the art fine mobility in line with the accelerating comprehensive renaissance in the State of Qatar, which is preparing to host the World Cup Qatar 2022. The Qatari fine art goes side by side with the states preparations, by building artistic models for the sports facilities and holding introductory art exhibitions of the tournament locally and abroad.

Artist Mohammed Ali Abdullah said that the State of Qatar has a tremendous development in fine art thanks to the state institutions' sponsorship, which have not only paid attention to the renaissance of fine art in the country, but also contributed to the advancement of fine art through the establishment of the Arab Museum of Modern Art that represents a milestone in the development of fine art in the State of Qatar and the Arab world.

Meanwhile, Artist Salman Al Malik, the Director of the Visual Arts Center of the Ministry of Culture and Sports - a center dedicated to enriching the art scene with young talents and training young talents in various artistic fields - said that fine art in the State of Qatar is one of the most important and active cultural fields, noting that activities related to fine art, such as exhibitions, workshops and lectures are organized almost everyday in the State, whether at the level of academic institutions or governmental and private cultural institutions.

He noted an increase in the number of Qatari fine artists of both genders and a rise of the artistic level and the visual taste, as a result of the large number of art exhibitions, adding that fine artists in the State of Qatar do not have limits for their ambition, and they always seek to advance, excel and participate strongly in international exhibitions.

On the Arab cultural impact made by the Prize, General Supervisor of the Katara Prize for Arabic Novel Khaled Abdulrahim Al Sayed said in a statement to Qatar News Agency (QNA) that the most important characteristic of this award is that it is an integrated Arab project to serve the Arabic novel.

He added that Katara Prize took upon itself the link between the novel, drama and fine art, as it was a new platform that increases the richness of the Arab narrative, and also provided the largest specialized archive for Arab novels and Arab novelists, and established a library specializing in the Arabic novel, which highlight its impact on the Arab cultural scene in general.

The sixth edition of the prestigious Katara Prize for Arabic Novel has achieved record participation with a total of 2,220 entries in various categories. The sixth edition of Katara Prize for Arabic Novel chose Iraqi novelist Ghaib Tuma Farman to the 'Person of the Year, in the context of an annual tradition that the Prize Committee has used to celebrate an Arab literary figure who left a clear imprint on the march of Arab literature.

A total of $635,000 will be distributed to this years winners to be awarded on October 13 in line with the International Day of Arabic Novel.

The Ministry of Culture and Sports established the Center of Music Affairs in 2007 to be a platform for this art, starting with words and melodies and even singing performance.

In the context of achieving the Center's goal of preserving the privacy of Qatari music, The Center dedicated an annual celebration organized under the title 'The Night of the Qatari Song, to show the aesthetics of the Qatari song.

Qataris have sang since ancient times songs befitting their heritage, the reality of their present and their future prospects. On board of ships, the Qataris sang songs that reminded them of trust in God and motivated them to exert effort and search for their livelihood. On the backs of camels as they crossed the long deserts, singing was the companion of their journeys.

The Qatari environment is a source of renewed inspiration for Qatari musicians and singers. Musical expressions varied according to the colors of the nature in which the Qataris lived. The Qatari musical heritage and singing reflected the richness of emotion and the depth of meanings that stemmed from the artists connection to his history and society.
