(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Doha: As the COVID-19 pandemic has spread across the globe, a majority of countries had a temporary closure of schools, impacting more than 91 per cent of students worldwide around 1.6 billion children and young people.
Never before have so many children been out of school at the same time, disrupting learning and upending lives.
When educational facilities across Qatar closed in March to help contain COVID-19, many families found themselves struggling to keep their children's education on track.
The proactive and swiftly measures were taken by Qatar to ensure that schools and universities could shift to online learning in an effort to slow the spread of the disease. Drawing lessons from past experiences, the government had prepared an effective and robust system that was rolled out in a matter of days, enabling a smooth continuation of learning.
'Despite all the circumstances, we have been thinking, how we can contribute our efforts in reducing the impacts of the virus towards education. We're all in this together. In short term, we utilised our existing online platform, and we have put together a list of free online resources for students, parents, schools, educators, in order to help them navigate these unfamiliar times, said Founder of @Students_Qatar, Vahid Suljic. It is Qatar's largest student community with over 62,200 followers/subscribers.
Vahid said: 'Experience I had, and the fact-finding mission helped me to easily relate to challenges of students, so we successfully centralized all information and activities in one place. We also encouraged all students to participate and create a rich well of information.
'Lots of universities are doing a fine job in this regard but there is always something missing and there was no proper link between universities. Students are smart and pragmatic.
'They quickly recognized the one-stop shop. They can now do advanced research and explore their option, decide on their next move. It also opens a great opportunity to high school students and their parents for a closer and more realistic insight into the actual university that they might offer for their kids.
