Jordan- 52K wage delay-, dismissal-related complaints received since pandemic began


(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Amman, Sep. 29 (Petra) -- More than 52,000 complaints related to wage payment delay and layoffs have been lodged with the Ministry of Labor by private sector employees since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in early March.
After investigating the complaints, the ministry had found that 3,121 workers had been lawfully laid off while 5,043 employees had been reinstated in their jobs after it was found out that they had been subject to wrongful terminations, the ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.
Furthermore, the ministry indicated that 701 complaints were referred to courts for further examination and 123 other grievances were being probed by the ministry.
With regard to wage payment delay, the statement noted that 763 employers were found in violation of Defense Order No. 6 of 2020 after they had delayed the paychecks of their employees.
Minister of Labor Nidal Batayneh said a total of 7,853 employers with a headcount of 325,871 remained committed to paying their employees.
According to the minister, the number of employees who delay paychecks had been reduced to 953 only down from 5,786, noting that the figures cover only those who came forward and filed complaints with the ministry.
