Kenya is going to allocate 400 million shillings (USD3.7 million) on yearly basis to improve the protection of rhinos in the wild in the middle of the growing threats, according to an official on Tuesday.

Cabinet secretary for Tourism and Wildlife, Najib Balala, said that the new funding is going to be sourced from the public coffers, industry and overseas donors as it is going to support the recruitment of rangers and acquisition of surveillance technology to enhance the protection of the iconic but endangered species.

The official said that "kenya is committed to reducing mortality of rhinos and sustain gains that have been achieved to secure their future".

Adding that "we plan to mobilize 400 million shillings annually to recruit additional rangers to patrol rhino habitats and procure surveillance technology required to stamp out poaching".
