Qatar- Al Shahaniya joins Unesco Global Network of Learning Cities

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Doha: Al Shahaniya has been included in the latest list of Unesco Global Network of Learning Cities (GNLC).  The city has been recognised as an outstanding example of how lifelong learning can become a reality at local level.

'Al Shahaniya has a strong system of lifelong learning in place and is highly motivated to further develop this. By doing so, the municipality seeks to provide a nourishing environment for all of its citizens, contributing to the development of society and realising the Qatar's vision for sustainable development 2030, David Atchoarena, Director Unesco Institute for Lifelong Learning told The Peninsula.

Unesco GNLC members benefit from sharing lifelong learning policies and practices with other cities in the network, developing and exchanging knowledge on key challenges and solutions, taking part in training initiatives, and participation in regional and global events.

The new member cities were presented in an online event. Al Shahaniya along with 54 other cities from 27 countries was included into the Unesco Institute for Lifelong Learning, an international policy-oriented network geared towards knowledge production and sharing, peer learning and capacity-building. Al Shahaniya is the first city from Qatar to be included in Unesco GNLC.

According to Atchoarena, by joining the global network, policy makers, administration executives as well as all education stakeholders from Al Shahaniya now have access to the expertise of 229 other cities around the globe which have committed to lifelong learning. 'They are able to exchange good practices in a structured way and work jointly on challenges such as education for sustainable development, entrepreneurship or health education.

'The city rightly includes all education stakeholders in making lifelong learning a reality for the citizens of Al Shahaniya. City leaders have confirmed their strong commitment to the learning city concept and involve representatives to school principals, members of the municipality council and prime sector establishments to implement their lifelong learning vision, said Atchoarena.

'A particular feature of Al Shahaniya surely is its work on environmental education for citizens of all ages. Various projects such as the 'plant a tree' initiative, environmental awareness raising programmes in educational institutions and via mass media and much more are truly exemplary. I am sure that many other members of the Unesco Global Network of Learning Cities will be able to learn from these initiatives, he added.

All the cities on the Unesco GNLC list have proven that effective lifelong learning policies and practices can support the development of inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable cities and contribute to the 2030 Agenda. The new members bring the total number of cities within the Unesco GNLC to 230 in 64 countries.

'The municipality of Al Shahaniya applies the strategy of the State of Qatar for 2030 aiming at developing the population of the region to be able to build a prosperous and developed society, and the municipality seeks to promote a culture of learning that helps the community to face challenges and provide a clear concept of lifelong learning, said Jabir Aljabir, Director of the Al Shahaniya Municipality.
