Chairman of Car Importers Association of Kenya, Peter Otieno, announced on Wednesday that the automobile imports of the country are mostly going to need two years to recover from the bad impacts of the coronavirus pandemic.
The official added that the country has imported around 130,000 vehicles in 2019, however, he added that "since March when the first COVID-19 case was confirmed in Kenya there has been a 95 percent drop in demand for vehicles. This means it could take between two to three years for the industry to recover to pre-COVID-19 levels".
Saying that the cessation of movement that stopped entry into and out of Nairobi and Mombasa severely affected car sales buyers were not able to get vehicles out of Mombasa port.
The official then said that the car sales are starting to recovery as the economy continues to gradually reopen and life continues to resume as normal.
