Qatar to open Copa America campaign against Peru next year


(MENAFN- Gulf Times) Asian champions Qatar will take on Peru in their opening match of the Copa America on June 13 next year. The tournament, co-hosted by Argentina and Colombia, was originally scheduled this year, but was postponed after the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. A revised schedule was released on Thursday. 
Next year the tournament will be from June 11 to July 10, 2021. For the first time in the history of the Copa America, two countries are hosting Argentina and Colombia. The opening match will be in Argentina. The final will be in Colombia.
Qatar are in Group B along with defending champions Brazil, runners-up Peru, Colombia, Venezuela and Ecuador. Qatar are one of the two special invitees to the tournament along with Australia. Qatar had played in the last edition's Copa America in Brazil, where they drew with Paraguay 2-2 and lost to Argentina (0-2) and Colombia (0-1).
Qatar play Ecuador in their second match on June 17, followed by matches against Brazil (June 21), Venezuela (June 24) and Colombia (June 28). 
Group A includes Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia and Australia, the other special invitee team. Group A teams play their games in Argentina.
