(MENAFN- Khaama Press) A group of 11 Afghan Sikhs and Hindus arrived in India on Sunday who are seeking Indian permanent residency and citizenship amid growing violence targeting the minority group in Afghanistan.
According to a statement released by Delhi BJP, 11 Afghan Sikhs and Hindus arrived in India on Sunday including Nidan Singh Sachdeva who was recently released from captivity. The Sikhs who returned from Afghanistan included Nidan Singh, Makand Lal, Sanmeet Kaur, Balendra Singh, Charan Kaur Singh, Balvan Kaur Singh, Gurjit Singh, Manmeet Kaur, Mandeep Singh, Poonam Kaur and Praveen Singh.
"1st group of 11 members of Sikh & Hindu minority community of Afghanistan,including Mr.Nidan Singh Sachdeva who was recently released from captivity,reached Delhi today.GoI is facilitating return of Hindu & Sikh community members seeking permanent residency & citizenship in India," Anurag Srivastava, a spokesperson for the External Affairs Ministry of India said in a Twitter post.
India has decided to welcome 700 Afghans given the increase in attacks on the Sikh community by "Pakistan-based" terror organisations, according to a report by India Today.
The report also added that the decision was made by the Indian government after Afghan Sikh Nidan Singh was rescued in Afghanistan on July 18.
