Britain reports first increase in inflation rate in June for 2020

The British Office for National Statistics (ONS) said on Wednesday that the consumer price index (CPI) 12 month rate in the UK reported a mild increase to set at 0.6 percent in June, rising from the 0.5 percent recorded a month earlier in May, which showed the first rise of the index in 2020.

In spite of the slight increase, the 0.6 percent figure was still way under the English Bank's 2 percent inflation target.

The CPI including owner occupiers' housing costs (CPIH) 12-month inflation rate stood at a total of 0.8 percent in the cited month, expanding from the 0.7 percent recorded a month earlier in May.

Deputy national statistician and director general for economic statistics at the ONS, Jonathan Athow, said that "the inflation rate has increased for the first time this year, but remains low by historical standards".
