Lebanese obstruct roads in Beirut

(MENAFN) Lebanese demonstrators obstructed numerous roads in the capital Beirut on Monday, amid rising irritation over failing economic conditions in the country.

In a declaration, Lebanon's traffic control room said protesters burned tires and obstructed roads in the capital in demonstration of common power shutdowns.

Drivers also performed a demonstration outside the head office of the Interior Ministry in the Sanayeh area of Beirut to claim the annulment of mechanics and inspection fees. They also demanded to drop fuel prices.

Lebanon's currency has taken a drop, losing around 70 percent of its value in recent months. Lira was trading on the unofficial market at 9,000 against the U.S. dollar. It is traded for 1,507 against the U.S. dollar on the official market.

In the meantime, dozens of laid-off teachers staged a sit-in in front of the Ministry of Education in Beirut against what they call "arbitrary dismissals in educational institutions."
