Jordan- Ministry warns of livestock, bees heat stress dangers

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Amman, July 2 (Petra) -- Livestock breeders and bee farmers are urged to take precautions handling their cattle and bees during the current heat wave, the Agriculture Ministry said Thursday.
In a statement, the ministry said that the excessive heat with elevated humidity may push the livestock heat stress index, leading to many health problems.
"Excessive heat may cause concerns for livestock in terms of difficulty in maintaining a pregnancy or giving birth, bovine mastitis and a drop in milk production due to reduced feed intake," the ministry added.
To help animals endure these weather conditions, breeders are advised to provide a plentiful supply of cool, clean water and shade and avoid working or transporting animals during periods of extreme temperatures. Animals also need to be provided with high quality feed to maintain nutrient intake.
Broilers of birds and poultry are also urged to facilitate heat loss by improving ventilation and increase air movement around the place, which can be done with fans.
"Beehives must be close to water sources and avoid direct sunlight," the ministry added further.
