EU seeks to increase humanitarian aid for Syrian refugees


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BRUSSELS, June 3 (KUNA) -- The European Commission Wednesday proposed an amendment to the EU's 2020 budget to increase support for refugees and host communities in response to the Syria crisis to a total of 585 million euro (USD 657 million).
Out of the amount proposed today, 100 million euro (USD 112 million) will go to Jordan and Lebanon, who are hosting the largest number of refugees per capita in the world, said the EU's executive body in a press release.
485 million euro (USD 545 million) will go to support refugees in Turkey in 2020.
The proposal will now go to the European Parliament and the EU Council of ministers for their approval.
So far, the EU and its Member States have mobilised more than 20 billion euro (USD 22 billion) since 2011 to respond to the Syria crisis, it added.(end)
