São Paulo - Dubai is gradually reopening to economic activity as of Wednesday (27). News website Arabian Business reported that commercial activity will be allowed from 7 am to 11 pm. This will be the last phase in the loosening of government-enforced restrictions to curb the spread of Covid-19. Establishments allowed to function will include movie theaters, gyms, and education and training centers.

The emirate had been in lockdown since late March. All businesses will be required to embrace measures including the wearing of facemasks and keeping people two meters apart. The Arabian Business website also said children under 12 will not be allowed in establishments.

The website quoted Dubai crown prince and executive council chair Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum as saying the administration is 'aware of the pressures many sectors are facing because of the repercussions of the Covid-19 pandemic.' Al Maktoum stressed the resilience of UAE society and said he's confident that 'all members of the society will come together to overcome this crisis as soon as possible.'

The UAE had announced a two-phase reopening strategy. Late April had seen Dubai restaurants reopen, including three Jumeirah Group establishments. Requirements include 30% maximum capacity and keeping tables 2 meters apart.

The UAE government website reports 31,086 cases of coronavirus infection and 253 deaths. The Ministry of Health is campaigning to test citizens for Covid-19. This Tuesday (26) saw 779 new cases confirmed, down from 822 on Monday (25).
