Tunisia's first female doctor honored in currency bill

São Paulo – Tunisia is honoring its first-ever female doctor, Tawhida Ben Cheikh, on new TND 10 bills.

The new bills went into circulation towards the end of March. Tunisian Central Bank governor Abdelaziz Ben Said was quoted in a statement as saying Dr. Ben Cheikh has been picked as a tribute to all women in the fields of science and medicine.

Born in 1909, Tawhida Ben Cheikh was the first female medical practitioner in Tunisia as welel as North Africa.

After completing her studies in France, she opened her practice in Tunisia, 1936. Dr. Ben Cheikh also created 'Layla,' the country's first French-language magazine for women.

The new bill was met with widespread acclaim.
