Kuwait- Ten countries overwhelmed by surges in coronavirus cases


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) KUWAIT, April 5 (KUNA) -- The health authorities in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Qatar, Iraq's Kurdistan, Jordan, Palestine, Tunisia, Morocco, Sudan, Greece and Turkey updated their data on infections and deaths from the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) on Sunday.
In the UAE, the Ministry of Health and Prevention said 294 more cases have been identified in the past 24, bringing the overall tally to 1,798.
The new cases are community transmission cases and involve people of different nationalities, the ministry said in a press release.
It attributed the surge in figures to the patient's non-abidance by the preventive measures, including social distancing.
Nineteen coronavirus patients have recovered and were discharged from hospitals, thus bringing to 144 the overall recoveries, the statement added.
In Qatar, the Ministry of Public Health confirmed a fourth death associated with Covid-19 and 279 more infection cases.
The victim is a Qatari man, 88, who suffered from pre-existing diseases before passing way this morning.
The new 279 cases took to 1,604 the total number of infections while the recoveries surged by 14 to 123, according to a statement by the ministry.
In Kurdistan region, north Iraq, 19 more cases, identified in the past 24 hours, pushed the overall to 233.
Three fatalities from the disease and a total of 85 recoveries were reported in the region so far.
In Jordan, Minister of Health Saad Jaber said 22 people have tested positive for Covid-19, bringing to 325 the total number of infections in the kingdom.
Thirty-six patients have recovered, taking the total to 110, the minister told a press conference.
The Kingdom of Jordan has suffered five fatalities from the virus so far.
In Palestine, the Health Ministry of Gaza Strip said no new Covid-19 cases were identified in the last 24 hours while a patients has recovered, bringing the total number of recoveries to six.
There are only six Covid-19 patients in the Strip and all of them are in a stable condition, spokesman of the ministry Ashraf Al-Qudrah said in his daily presser.
The health authorities decided to clear 321 persons, including 79 medical and nursing staff and policemen, from quarantine after verifying their safety, he said, noting that there are still 1,894 quarantined persons at 27 facilities.
Spokesman of the government in Ramallah Ibrahim Melhem said 17 persons tested positive for the virus today, bringing to 234 the total number of infections.
They include six patients are the wife and four children of a man who tested positive yesterday and a 18 year old teenager; they are residents of Betonia town, the spokesman said in a press release this evening.
In Tunisia, 21 persons tested positive for Covid 19, bringing to 574 the overall.
The death toll stands at 22, according to a statement from the Tunisian Ministry of Health.
In Morocco, 71 new cases pushed the overall to 990 while the death toll surged by 10 to 69.
Five patients have recovered, bringing the total to 71, director of the epidemics dept. at the Ministry of Health Mohammad Al-Youbi said in a press briefing.
In Sudan, two more cases have been identified, bringing to 12 the overall number, according to a statement from the Ministry of Health.
The ministry noted that 165 suspected cases were kept in quarantine as of yesterday.
One patient succumbed to the illness and two others recovered, the ministry said before.
In Turkey, Minister of Health Fahrettin Koca said 73 more people died from the coronavirus in the country, bringing the death toll to 574.
The total number of coronavirus cases surged to 27,069 as 3,135 more people tested positive for the virus over the past 24 hours, Anadolu Agency (AA) quoted him as saying in a tweet.
So far, a total of 1,042 patients have recovered and been discharged from hospitals, while 1,381 patients are currently under intensive care units, the data shows.
The minister noted that 20,065 Covid-19 tests were conducted today, bringing the overall to 181,445.
In Greece, Spokesman the Greek Ministry of Health Sotirios Tsiodras confirmed 62 more cases and five fatalities, which brought to 1,735 and 73 the overall infections and death toll, respectively.
Ten patients have recovered while 93 others are still at ICUs, he said in his daily press briefing. (end)
