Sri Lanka- AG calls for cancellation of HC sittings

(MENAFN- Colombo Gazette) The Attorney General (AG) has requested the Chief Justice (CJ) to cancel sittings fixed at all High Courts (HC) tomorrow (02) and on Friday (03).

In a letter to the CJ, the Attorney General said the request has been put forward keeping in mind the current situation in the country due to the Coronavirus outbreak.

The AG said over 100 cases, mostly relating to bail applications for serious drug offences, are scheduled for hearing at High courts over the next two days.

The AG said as a result, it is not advisable to expose officials of the Court, Lawyers, State Counsel, the Police and Judges to participate and appear in court proceedings.

The request for cancellation is being made after taking into consideration the government health warnings, repeated consistent medical advice with regard to social distancing and other precautions that need to be taken against the spread of the COVID- 19 pandemic, the AG added.

The AG further requested the CJ to reschedule the sittings for when the environment is conducive in the future to hold court proceedings. (Colombo Gazette)
