Kuwait- Coronavirus runs rampant across world


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) KUWAIT, March 31 (KUNA) -- The lethal and highly contagious novel coronavirus (COVID-19) is running rampant across the world, claiming thousands of lives and infected more tens of thousands others everyday.
In Turkey, the death toll from the new coronavirus rose to 214 after 46 more people died of the disease in the past 24 hours, the Health Ministry announced.
The total number of confirmed cases ballooned to 13,531, as another 2,704 people tested positive for the virus, according to the ministry data.
A total of 243 patients have recovered and been discharged from hospitals since the beginning of the outbreak, according to the data, which said 847 patients are being treated under intensive care.
In Austria, the Health Ministry confirmed 340 new infections and 20 deaths related to the respiratory disease.
The total number of infections across the country has now reached 10,095 and the deaths climbed to 128.
In Switzerland, one of the countries most affected by the coronavirus, the Health Ministry said the number of positive tests have edged up to 16,176 and deaths rose to 373.
In Algeria, the Health Ministry announced a record nine deaths in a day and 132 new infections.
It pointed out that the overall number of fatalities have skyrocketed to 44 and the number of positive cases reached 716.
In Greece, the Health Ministry's spokesman and infectious diseases professor Sotiris Tsiodras announced 82 new confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Greece in the last 24 hours and seven new deaths.
He said that 383 passengers onboard a ship were tested for COVID-19, and some 20 new infections were reported there.
Speaking at the daily televised update on the pandemic, he said this brings the country's total to 1,314 confirmed infections and 49 deaths.
From those who have died since the start of the outbreak, 37 were men and 16 were women, over 90 percent had underlying health issues and their average age was over 70 years of age.
Some 85 patients are being treated in Intensive Care Units. The average age of ICU patients is 66 years, and more than half of these suffer from underlying health issues. A total of six people have so far been discharged from ICUs.
In Poland, 227 new people tested positive for the respiratory disease in the past 24 hours taking the toll up to 2,132.
It also recorded five new COVID-19 related deaths, up to 31, the Ministry of Health reported.
In Albania, health authorities announced a surge in infection cases and deaths in the past 24 hours.
It disclosed that the virus has killed three people today, raising the toll to 13.
A total of 28 people have also tested positive, taking the aggregate figure up to 240.
In Iraq, the deadly bug has killed four people and infected 65 others in the past 24 hours.
This raises the country's death toll up to 50 and the infection cases rise to 695, according a statement by the Ministry of Health.
In Armenia, 50 new COVID-19 cases were confirmed in one day, bringing the aggregate number to 532, Healthcare Ministry Spokesperson Alina Nikoghosyan said.
She said that 23 of the cases were quarantined, and 24 are direct contacts of earlier cases. The contacts of the remaining three cases are being traced, she said.
Nikoghosyan clarified that with 30 recoveries and 3 fatalities, the number of active cases is 499.
In Bahrain, the Ministry of Health reported 52 new cases of infection, only four of them have recently returned from abroad while the residue have caught the bug after contacting previously announced infected people.
It estimated the number of active cases at 268 and the number of recovered cases at 295.
The lethal virus has claimed the lives of four people in Bahrain so far.
In Oman, the Ministry of Health today announced 13 new positive cases with coronavirus (COVID-19) across the Sultanate to reach 192 cases.
The ministry also pointed out that over 34 cases have recovered.
In Morocco, the Ministry of Health confirmed 18 new cases of infection, bringing the overall number to 574.
In Jordan, the virus infected six more people in the past 24 hours, increasing the accumulative number to 274, said health minister Saad Jaber.
He pointed out that no more fatalities were reported today, thus the death toll stood at five.
Jaber also stated that 30 people were fully recovered and released from the quarantine facilities.
Meanwhile, the COVID-19 fatalities in the North African country stood at 33, it added.
In Russia, the Tass news agency reported that the chief physician of the clinic for coronavirus patients in Moscow's Kommunarka, Denis Protsenko has been infected with the novel coronavirus.
Russia has identified 2,337 coronavirus cases so far, 121 patients have recovered and 17 have died. Moscow accounts for the majority of cases (1,613). (pickup previous)
