(MENAFN) A recent military operation in the northeastern state of Borno in Nigeria resulted in the death of a senior commander of the terror group Boko Haram, according to the confirmation of local defense officials made on Monday.
The Boko Haram commander was recognized as Abu Usamah who commanded the terror outfit in an encounter with troops on March 22, Xinhua news agency quoted the defense media center in Borno as declaring in a statement.
The statement added that during the said conflicts with troops in Gorgi, a town in the Damboa local government area of Borno, Abu Usamah has sustained serious injuries that led to his death on Monday.
The agency further included "His death has no doubt created a consequential vacuum in the Boko Haram leadership particularly as the gallant troops remain resilient and continue to rout the criminal elements from their last enclaves in the northeast."
