US opposes creation of parallel Afghan government

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Washington, March 10 (Petra) -- The United States opposes any efforts to create a parallel government in Afghanistan, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Monday, hours after the country's president, Ashraf Ghani, and his main election rival, Abdullah Abdullah, held competing inauguration ceremonies.
"We strongly oppose any action to establish a parallel government, and any use of force to resolve political differences," Pompeo said in a statement.
However, Pompeo welcomed at the same time, Ghani and Abdullah's declaring their commitment to the goal of achieving peace, stressing that "the United States is working to reach an agreement between the two parties".
