Qatar University hosts workshop to educate public on keto diet

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Qatar University (QU) hosted workshop, 'Keto Diet: What is it? Does it work?, which aimed to educate participants on the details of the ketogenic diet.
The workshop was organised by the university's Continuing Professional Development of Health Professionals (CPD-HP) Program and accredited by the Qatar Council for Healthcare Practitioners.
Participants included a mix of nearly 100 health practitioners, members of primary health care and QU faculty and students, who attended to understand the mechanisms of the keto diet. They also learned how trainees differentiate between the nutrients of energy in relation to the metabolism process. In addition, the workshop explained the components of the diet and the health benefits and risks associated with it.
The keto diet is a low-carb, high-fat diet, which causes the body to burn fat. During the workshop, participants were able to gain answers to their questions and concerns regarding this system, as it still incites reservations from doctors and nutritionists alike. Concern from health professionals is due to the high level of fat and cholesterol in blood associated with the diet, which could cause insulin resistance. There are also fears of high blood pressure and side effects such as kidney stones, vitamin deficiency and high blood acidity.
Professor of Nutrition, Head of the Clinical Education Department, and Head of the Continuous Professional Development Unit, Dr Heba Bawadi stressed the importance of the workshop saying: 'This workshop works to combat scientific fallacies that are spread across social media sites in particular with regard to food diets, including the keto diet, which has health implications that may be dangerous to the health of the individual.
The CPD-HP Program reflects the commitment of the four QU Health colleges (College of Medicine, College of Pharmacy, College of Health Sciences and College of Dental Medicine) to the continuing professional development of health professionals in the country. The goal of the program is to support the lifelong learning of all practicing care providers to ensure optimal patient care.
The CPD-HP Program achieves its mandate, in part, through the provision of educational programs that will improve and expand the competency of health professionals, researchers, physicians, dieticians, nutritionists, scientists, nurses, pharmacists and allied professionals involved in the health care practice.
