(MENAFN- Khaama Press) Jens Stoltenberg, Secretary-General of NATO condemned Iran's Wednesday missile strikes on the US military bases in Iraq.
Stoltenberg condemned Iran's attack on the US and Coalition forces and called on Iran in a tweeter message to avoid further violence.
"I condemn the Iranian missile attacks on US & @coalition forces in Iraq. #NATO calls on Iran to refrain from further violence. Allies continue to consult & remain committed to our training mission in Iraq.", NATO Chief tweeted.
Iran hit two US military bases in Iraq on Wednesday morning, firing at least 15 missiles.
Iranian state television said at least 80 "American terrorists" were killed in attacks involving 15 missiles Tehran launched on US targets in Iraq, adding that none of the missiles were intercepted.
But United States President Donald Trump said in a tweet that an assessment of casualties and damage from the strikes was underway and "All is well!"
Iran's supreme leader said a "slap in the face" was delivered to the US after the attack. "Last night, a slap in the face was delivered," Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said in a speech on Wednesday broadcast live on state television, Economic Times of India reported .
Iran's President Hassan Rouhani said Iran's response shows "we don't retreat in the face of America. If America has committed a crime… it should know that it will receive a decisive response," Rouhani said in a televised address.
"If they are wise, they won't take any other action at this juncture ..
The tensions in the Middle East arose following a US drone strike on Baghdad's airport last Friday which killed a top Iranian military leader, Qassem Soleimani.
Qassem Soleimani was the head of Quds forces of Iran who had established four regional militia divisions including Liwa Fatemiyoun, a Shia Militia group to fight ISS in Syria.
