Asian Men's Handball Championship: Qatar to take on South Korea in main round opener

DOHA: Eyeing a place in the semi-finals, defending champions Qatar will take on South Korea today in their first match of the main round at the Asian Men's Handball Championship a qualifying event for the 2021 World Championships in Egypt.

Qatar reached the main rounds of the event after topping their group in the preliminary round in Kuwait, marking commanding victories over China (49-18) and Japan (36-28).

South Korea advanced to the main stage after their win over Australia (40-20). They lost to Saudi Arabia (25 -27) in their other match. The eight qualifying teams have been divided into two groups, from which the top two sides will enter the semi-finals.

Group 1 includes Bahrain, Japan, Saudi Arabia and the UAE, while Qatar and South Korea are in Group 2 along with Kuwait and Iran.

In other matches today, Bahrain face the UAE while Saudi Arabia will take on Japan. Hosts Kuwait will clash with Iran.

Qatar have become a dominating force in the continental event, winning the last three editions of the biennial event. Their previous title came after a win over Bahrain in the final.
