Qatar- MME, QPMC team up to recycle construction waste


(MENAFN- Gulf Times) The Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) has signed a co-operation agreement with Qatar Primary Materials Company (QPMC) to enhance co-operation in the field of construction waste recycling at Rawdat Rashed landfill.
The agreement was signed by Assistant Undersecretary for Public Services Affairs at the MME Safar Mubarak al-Shafi and CEO of QPMC Essa Mohamed Ali Kaldari.
Al-Shafi stated that the agreement aimed at treating and recycling the construction waste located at Rawdat Rashed landfill, as well as rehabilitating and fully cleaning it, adding it is part of the ministry's plans towards achieving sustainability and preserving the environment, and within the programmes of the public services affairs sector towards sorting and recycling all forms of various municipal waste, including construction waste.
He noted that this agreement would largely contribute to the achievement of Qatar National Vision 2030, and it is considered a qualitative shift in Qatar's efforts in terms of treating construction waste and occupying in advanced ranks among countries in this field.
Al-Shafi explained that one of the agreement's objectives was to implement community partnership by allowing the private sector to participate in the implementation of various projects and programmes for recycling and handling waste, including treatment of construction waste and converting it into materials suitable for use in infrastructure and construction projects, in addition to cleaning the Rawda Rashed landfill and rehabilitating it so that the ministry can utilise it in other purposes in the coming period, adding that the project aims to reduce the use of natural resources, including raw debris, and to preserve the safety and health of the environment surrounding the Rawdat Rashed area.
The Assistant Undersecretary for Public Services Affairs pointed out that the Rawdat Rashed landfill has about 40mn tonnes of mixed construction waste with an area of about 7mn square meters, which contributes to filling many of the State's construction needs, noting that the MME has plans and integrated programmes towards the treatment of all forms of waste.
The agreement, therefore, is part of these plans until 2022 to reach the best levels and standards in the field of waste recycling in all its forms in order to achieve sustainability and preserve the environment, he added.
He said that Qatar represented by the MME pays great attention to the field of municipal waste recycling, as it had established a unique center for solid waste treatment to convert waste into electrical energy.
The Assistant Undersecretary for Public Services Affairs praised the co-operation between the ministry and the QPMC, and its significant positive impact on the safety and sustainability of the environment, and in strengthening and supplying the local market with local raw materials along with preserving the country's natural resources.
The CEO of QPMC stressed that the agreement was the result of continuous co-ordination between the MME and the QPMC, which is in line with the Qatar Vision 2030 in terms of preserving the environment and providing the necessary raw materials for the construction and industrial sector through the recycling of construction waste at Rawdat Rashed landfill.
He added that the construction waste recycling project is a qualitative shift in the field of recycling, as it provides raw materials for companies and other entities and contributes significantly to a marked development in the field of industries and construction and to the provision of construction raw materials to all construction and industrial sectors in the country.
