KABUL: Germany is ready to
intercede the government of Afghanistan and Taliban militants to hold
negotiations, said German Ambassador to Kabul, Markus Potzel.
Taliban who previously
rejected any talks with the government, have recently showed interest in
sitting with representatives of President Ashraf Ghani. The militants'
spokesman in Qatar said they would hold talks with the government once they
gained a deal with the United States.
Potzel said that mediation
in Afghan peace talks was 'very important' and could help for a durable peace
in the war-hit country. He emphasized on a trust building between the
government and Taliban, calling on them to pay respect to each other's
opinions.
'This is very important to mediate the Afghan peace talks. It
can help the talks and mediation can help Afghans gain a lasting peace. A trust
building is needed between the government of Afghanistan and Taliban and they
should respect each other's interests. We are ready to mediate the peace
negotiations,' said Potzel.
A government official
said that talks would be impossible without the government presence, asking the
Taliban to come for an intra-Afghan dialogue.
The US envoy for Afghan
peace, Zalmay Khalilzad is getting ready to restart talks with Taliban
representatives in Qatar after the process was paused last week.
