US, Iraqi Kurdistan seek to step up IS fight


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) IRBIL, Dec 7 (KUNA) -- The United States and Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdish region have agreed to cooperate to eliminate the lingering threat posed by the so-called Islamic State (IS), Washington's Syria envoy said on Saturday.
Iraq's Kurdistan region and the US share historic relations, James Jeffery, the US Special Representative for Syria Engagement and Special Envoy to the Global Anti-IS Coalition, told reporters after talks with Prime MinisterMasrour Barzani.
Jeffery, who is due to visit the Iraqi capital Baghdad later on Saturday for talks with senior officials, emphasized Washington's commitment to a safe and prosperous Iraq.
The US envoy's visit is part of efforts to ensure an enduring defeat of IS in Irqa and Syria, he added. (end)
