(MENAFN- Gulf Times) Folk songs, dances, and a display of traditional handicrafts related to the maritime culture and heritage of different countries have attracted large numbers of visitors to the ongoing 9th Traditional Dhow Festival, at Katara--the Culture Village Foundation's beach.
In particular, the operetta show, presented twice Friday evening, was highly appreciated by the spectators. Children presented a musical portrait of the progress of the maritime history of the country from the times when pearl diving and hunting was the main source of income and how the dhows used to spend long months in their sea journeys to return with a variety of goods.

Participants from Kuwait, Oman, Iraq, Turkey, India, Greece, Italy, Spain, Iran, and Zanzibar continue to entertain the public with their folk shows and dances, featuring folk music particular to their coastal cities. Stalls such as the Greek house and the Turkish house have displayed various aspects of their distinctive cultures including popular dishes, art forms, fishing industry and the related traditional handicrafts such as fishing nets, baskets and others.
There are various designated places at the festival venue where the visitors can buy traditional Qatari meals and dishes, which have received considerable turnout of customers. The display of relevant handicrafts by the participants, especially from Qatar, Oman, Kuwait and Iraq, were also highly received by the visitors, who have be keen to have a close look at the craftsmen.
Many models of traditional dhows are on display, and the visitors could buy them from the retailers, in addition to other gifts and spices.
Katara general manager Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim al-Sualiti honoured Friday Turkish ambassador to Qatar Fikret Ozar, senior official Ahmet Adanur from the Turkish city Trabzon, Qatar University president Dr Hassan al-Derham during their visit to the festival.
The 9th Traditional Dhow Festival will remain open for the public until December 16, with more activities and shows to entertain and educate visitors.
