Global Oman Power Market 2019: Types, Applications, Drivers, Challenges, Opportunities, Shares, Countries, Revenue Analysis & Forecast Till 2024
Posted on Dec 6 2019 12:17 PM
"Oman Power Market is a comprehensive study on current state of Oman Power Industry along with competitive and comparative analysis of key players, demand for products, segmentation by type, applications and investment opportunities for interested people or companies."
Oman's power generation sector is overly dependent on gas-fired generation, with gas amounting to over 90% of the power generation in the country in 2018. Oil is responsible for the rest of the production in the country. The oil-fired production is mainly the result of oil being used as a secondary fuel in gas-fired power plants. Factors such as growing deployment of renewable energy power plants, targets to achieve diversification in the power generation sector, and the increasing demand for electricity are expected to be the major drivers for the power generation sector in the country. However, dominance of state-owned-enterprises (SOEs) and a negative business environment is expected to tighten the market penetration scope for private/overseas investors in the coming years.

- The power transmission and distribution infrastructure in Oman is expected to witness a significant growth in the coming years owing to the country's growing economy, resulting from the fast-growing population, change in lifestyles, rapid industrial and urban expansion, which has boosted the demand for power significantly in the recent years.
- In addition to clean coal and waste-to-energy plants, the renewable sector is expected to witness significant developments over the forecast period, which, in turn, is expected to open up market opportunities for both domestic and international renewable energy providers in the Omani power market.
Key Market Trends
Expansion of Transmission and Distribution Infrastructure
- Oman's electricity sector has two major networks, the Main Interconnected System (MIS) and the Dhofar Power System. Four distribution and supply license holders, i.e., Muscat Electricity Distribution Company (MEDC), Mazoon Electricity Company (MZEC), Majan Electricity Company (MJEC), and Dhofar Power Company (DPC), take the bulk of the power transmitted through the main grid stations to supply the distribution system.
- As of 2017, Oman's electricity transmission network comprised of 87 grid stations, interconnected by 132kV, 220kV, and 400kV overhead lines and underground cables.
- Oman Electricity Transmission Company (OETC) operated the extra high voltage (EHV) transmission network, covering over 95% of Oman's electricity market in its two licensed areas of Northern Oman (referred to as the Main Interconnected System or MIS) and Southern Oman (Dhofar Governorate) as of 2017.
- OETC completed 27 major projects during the period 2016-2017, with a total value of OMR 249 million, comprising new grid stations, overhead transmission lines, and underground cables. Under the OETC capital expenditure program, the company has planned around 38 transmission projects with a budgeted CAPEX of OMR 400 million for the period 2018-2022. These projects are designed for the evacuation of new generation capacity and to support load growth and system security in the country.
- With a number of transmission and distribution projects under planning, construction and design stages, the country's T & D infrastructure is expected to witness significant growth over the forecast period.
Competitive Landscape
The Oman power market is highly concentrated with the dominance of state-owned-enterprises in the country's power sector. Some of the major companies include Oman Electricity Transmission Company S.A.O.C, Muscat Electricity Distribution Company, Al Batinah Power Company SAOG, and Sohar Power Company SAOG.
