Doha prepares for International Conference on Disability and Development


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Qatar Foundation for Social Work has concluded a series of preliminary workshops for the Doha International Conference on Disability and Development to be held on Saturday and Sunday under the patronage of H H Sheikha Moza bint Nasser who is the founder of the foundation.
The conference, to be held in cooperation with a number of United Nations organizations and with the participation of high-level personalities from international, regional and local institutions, and attracting international attention, is due to culminate in the Doha Declaration, which will be a global constitution to promote the rights of nearly 1.5 billion people with disabilities worldwide.
The foundation concluded a series of preparatory workshops that included over 20 discussion sessions with the participation of CEO of Qatar Foundation for Social Work Amal bint Abdul Latif Al Mannai and hundreds of experts from universities, ministries, NGOs and relevant institutions to discuss a number of issues related to issues of persons with disabilities.
Al Mannai said that organising the conference required intensive efforts, evidenced by five workshops the foundation that featured hundreds of experts over the past few months. She expressed her hope that the conference would be a catalyst for an international movement to support the rights of persons with disabilities, and that the Doha Declaration would produce a roadmap for the promotion of the rights of persons with disabilities.
The first workshop, entitled ‘Strategies for Data Collection and Analysis and Building Inclusive Policies for Disability' with the participation of over 50 experts. The workshop examined the best practices and tools used globally in collecting data on persons with disabilities and how they can be used to develop policies that take into account their rights.
The workshop concluded that it was necessary to establish and update an integrated database for persons with disabilities on a regular basis, ensuring compatibility of data with international concepts and standards on disability.
The second workshop entitled ‘Assistive Technology and its Contribution to the Inclusive Development Goal of Disability' reflected the belief in the effective role of technology in helping people with disabilities and facilitating their social integration, especially with the advancement of Qatar in this field.
