Qatar- Iconic 2022 Building opens in Aspire Zone


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Prime Minister and Interior Minister, H E Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani, inaugurated yesterday the 2022 Building in Aspire Zone.

After displaying a short film about the development of sports and sports facilities in Qatar, His Excellency listened to a brief explanation on the details of the design of the building and its sections, as it is the first building in the world designed in the form of 2022.

The inauguration coincides with the ninth anniversary of the State of Qatar winning the right to organise the World Cup for the first time in the Middle East region. The inauguration was attended by a number of Their Excellencies Sheikhs and senior sports officials. 

The 2022 Building consisting of four blocks is stretched on an area of approximately 60,000 square metres. It is a mixed-use building that includes administrative offices and integrated health club and a series of restaurants and cafes as well as meeting rooms and an auditorium.

The building consists of four common rectangular buildings consisting of five floors in the form of numbers 2022 above the ground and mezzanine and connected to the basement. Through a modern design its facade has been given the horizontal projection to numbers 2022.

The 2022 Building is brain child of Sheikh Nasser bin Hamad bin Nasser Al Thani. 'The idea came from the day one when FIFA announced Qatar the host of 2022 FIFA World Cup, Sheikh Nasser bin Hamad bin Nasser Al Thani told The Peninsula on the sidelines of the opening ceremony.

He said that idea was to develop a building to be a legacy for this giant international sport event which could be the shape of the world cup trophy or year. 'Finally we decided to shape the building with year of 2022 FIFA World Cup converting the idea into this iconic building, said Al Thani.

Addressing the opening ceremony, Sheikh Nasser bin Hamad bin Nasser Al Thani, said: 'There is no doubt that December 2 represents a great day for us in the history of Qatar, being the day when our beloved country witnessed winning the right to host  2022 FIFA World Cup.

 He said that the idea of building 2022 precisely in 2010 came during his studies abroad, where he was following Blatter the then FIFA president pulled Qatar's name from the FIFA voting envelope in 2010. 

Talking to The Peninsula, Mohamed bin Hammam said that 2022 Building is a heritage for future, great achievement of private sector as a Qatari. 'I am proud of the idea and construction and of the people who have invested in the project to present something for Qatar 2022.
