Qatar- CRA conducts workshops in collaboration with ICANN

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) The Communications Regulatory Authority (CRA) in collaboration with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) conducted a one-day workshop on Handling Internet Identifiers Abuse and Misuse, and another three-day workshop on Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC).

Both workshops were conducted from November 11 - 14,  at CRA's headquarters and were attended by representatives from government entities, oil and gas sector, academia and private sector, financial sector, telecom service providers and law enforcement agencies.

Both workshops were conducted with the aim of building capacity and raising awareness among technical professionals about the DNS operation and security. The workshops focused on enhancing participants' understanding of the Internet unique identifier system, and equipping them with appropriate knowledge, skills, tools and technologies related to handling DNS abuses and domain name misuses. The DNSSEC workshop also presented the impact of DNSSEC on DNS infrastructure, in addition to its implementation and key management. Participants were introduced to the theory behind DNSSEC and undertook many hands-on exercises to understand how the technology works, and how to implement it within their networks.

The CRA has also conducted an academic engagement session in collaboration with ICANN on November 14, 2019, which was attended by the students and academics of College of the North Atlantic, Qatar (CNA-Q) at the College headquarters. The aim of the workshop was to educate participants about the Internet and its history, the formation of ICANN, understanding domain names, and sharing some security related technologies such as DNSSEC and the KSK Rollover. Students were also exposed to some recent trends when registering domain names.

'The workshop was conducted in light of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that was signed between Qatar and ICANN in 2014. The CRA ensures maintaining contact with ICANN to stay up to date with the latest developments in the field of the Internet domain names and to arrange for workshops and training courses for professionals in Qatar to equip them with the necessary skills and expertise, which will contribute to the achievement of our main objectives in this field; ensure the delivery of a secure Internet service to the people of Qatar, and boost the adoption of the Qatari domain names, said Eng. Abdulla Jassmi, Technical Affairs Department Manager, CRA.

'We are very excited with our CRA partnership in Qatar, to help raise awareness amongst the local technical community. This is the first set of workshops of their kind with the CRA, and we look forward to more engagements with the Internet community in Qatar said Fahd Batayneh; Senior Global Stakeholder Engagement Manager for the Middle East, ICANN.

'It was a pleasure hosting a presentation by Fahd Batayneh from the ICANN. His presentation on the Internet and DNS trends and latest technology to College of the North Atlantic Qatar Students, Faculty and Staff reaffirmed the curriculum we offer and the relevance to the IT industry in the State of Qatar. It was an excellent opportunity to engage our campus community and enhance the awareness of these topics being promoted by the CRA, said Leigh Willis - Chair and Interim Associate Dean - School of Business Management and Information Technology, CNA-Q.

ICANN was formed in 1998 as a not-for-profit public-benefit corporation with a community of participants from all over the world.
