Pakistan- Governor refutes rumours about Edwardes College privatization


(MENAFN- Tribal News Network) PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Shah Farman has once again made it clear that the Edwardes College in Peshawar is not being nationalized, it is a property of Christian community and its principal will always come from the same community.

Addressing a press conference at Governor House in Peshawar on Saturday, the governor refuted rumors about nationalization of Edwardes College and said propaganda is being made under a malicious campaign to tarnish the image of the country.

Shah Farman said minorities enjoy equal rights in Pakistan under the Constitution. He said the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) believes in the concept of Riyasat-e-Madina under which the minorities enjoy equal rights like Muslims. The governor said the Peshawar High Court (PHC) judgment about the college pointed towards the declining education standards at the college. He said efforts will be made to revive the old glory of Edwardes College. He said the decision of the PHC will be implemented in letter and spirit.

The governor said that Edwardes College was considered a prestigious educational institution of the country that produced many famous personalities. He said a Board of Governors (BoG) meeting has been convened which will discuss problems at the college and suggest solutions. He said the BoG members will also thoroughly discuss the problems faced by students and teachers.

Shah Farman expressed disappointment over the fact that some employees of the college on study leave in foreign countries are indulging in malicious campaign against the government for personal ends. He said this irresponsible act of these elements is detrimental to inter-faith harmony in the country.

The press conference of the governor came few days after he along with Chief Minister Mehmood Khan chaired a meeting over the issue of Edwardes College at the Governor House.

The meeting was briefed in detail about the affairs of Edwardes College and the government steps to resolve issues.

The meeting took important decisions under which the old status of the college will be maintained. The property of the college will never be shifted anywhere under the nationalization. It was decided that Edwardes College belongs to Christian community and it will remain as such.
