(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Doha: A delegation from the French Senate's Friendship Group with Gulf States was briefed on the experience and competencies of the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) and its role in protecting and promoting human rights, especially with regard to the rights of children and women.
This came during the reception of the NHRC at its headquarters yesterday, a delegation from the French Senate's Friendship Group with Gulf States, where the delegation was met by the Vice-Chairman of the Committee Dr Mohamed bin Saif Al Kuwari, and a number of directors of departments and legal experts.
An introductory presentation was made on NHRC, its competencies and its role in protecting and promoting human rights, especially with regard to the rights of children and women, as well as tackling a number of human rights issues, including the efforts of the NHRC to protect and promote workers' rights.
The NHRC officials responded to the delegation's queries about the role of the NHRC in spreading the culture of human rights in the country. It was highlighted that the Committee has a 5-year strategic plan that includes organizing lectures and programs targeting workers and employers, and is organized in a number of places where workers are present, as well as the establishment of community offices in the Committee to facilitate the processing of complaints, and the hotline, which operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, in addition to the role played by the reception and registration section of the Department of Legal Affairs, which provides free legal advice in addition to receiving complaints and petitions.
The Committee officials also pointed out that, as part of its awareness-raising and educational message, the NHRC distributes brochures and introductory brochures in vital institutions in the country, including a manual pocket book for workers, which contains simplified rights and duties of workers for all groups and has been translated into 10 languages.
