Gulf women sport tourney kicks off in Kuwait


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) KUWAIT, Oct 20 (KUNA) -- The sixth edition of Gulf Women's Sports Tournament kicked off Sunday in Kuwait and will last until October 30 with the participation of six teams competing in 11 individual and group games.
First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Sheikh Nasser Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah expressed hope, in a speech at the opening ceremony, that the competitions will show a distinct technical level performance, reflecting the development of women's sports in Kuwait and the GCC countries.
The tournament witnessed also the first participation of the Saudi teams.
For her part, Sheikha Naima Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, Chairman of the Supreme Organizing Committee of the championship, expressed thanks for the patronage and attendance of Sheikh Nasser Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, confirming his keenness and interest in sports and athletes.
Sheikha Naima said that this gulf celebration was completed with the participation of Saudi teams for the first time, which is a "distinctive addition", expressing hope and best wishes to participating teams.
She also praised efforts exerted by concerned authorities, to ensure success of Gulf women's sports, especially the General Authority for Sport, the Kuwaiti Olympic Committee, and the organizing committees for their support.
Regarding results in the first day of competitions UAE Latifa Al-Hosani won the gold medal, while her compatriot Noura Al-Buraiki won the silver medal in fencing.
In the basketball competitions, Qatar women's team beat Bahrain in a score of 74-46. (end)
