(MENAFN- Colombo Gazette) Sri Lanka and the UK have had talks on post Brexit issues Sri Lanka will face, especially if there is no deal reached between the EU and the UK.
Minister of Economic Reforms and Public Distribution Dr. Harsha de Silva, who is in the UK, met with the UK Minister of State at the Department for International Trade Conor Burns.
Dr. Harsha de Silva tweeted saying he had a key meeting with Burns on post Brexit and GSP issues.
He said that if the UK and EU fail to reach a deal on Brexit later this month preferential tariffs will continue for 52 lines instead of 172 to the UK.
"Discussed how to expand that list," Dr. Harsha de Silva said.
Conor Burns also tweeted on the meeting saying they discussed trade and economic links between the two countries.
The UK will be leaving the EU on 31 October and Burns said earlier the UK was working with businesses to ensure the UK is ready to trade from day one.
He said a recently announced temporary tariff regime will support the UK economy as a whole, helping British businesses to trade and opening up opportunities for business to import the best goods from around the world at the best prices for British consumers.
Burns said the UK is a free trading nation and British business is in a strong position to compete in an open, free-trading environment. (Colombo Gazette)
