Speaking at a panel discussion, Jacqueline Ng emphasised on the significance of Big Bad Wolf Book Sale to its attendees.
'We started travelling around the world in 2016 and our main mission is to instil the reading habit by providing readers access to affordable quality books. Books have the power to inspire and empower people with knowledge and we are providing the platform through the Big Bad Wold Book Sale. In the past decade, we have seen many young readers who have bought their first English book at the Big Bad Wolf Book Sale and they have now developed into well-read young folks. The Big Bad Wolf Book Sale has earned a loyal following across the world being a reading advocacy organisation and we are delighted to bring the Big Bad Wolf Book Sale back to Colombo for the third time with a wider range of books and bran-new titles'.
The passion in her cause was evident when she spoke of how a child's first introduction to a book is through the parents, and by making it affordable, the parents are more likely to buy more than one book. She spoke on how books open doors to life and all its wonder when your reality doesn't offer that opportunity; 'When you have no roof over your head, and when you don't when your next meal will come from, where do you find inspiration? Books'. She ended by saying that she was introduced to reading because a friend shared a book, so this time when you go to Big Bad Wolf Book Sale, buy a book, buy two of the same, and perhaps share it with a friend.
This time the Big Bad Wolf Book Sale will have a few changes with a key change being the opening times. Instead of the usual 24 hours every day, it will open at 10am and close at 10pm on weekdays, and only on the weekends it will be 24 hours. Furthermore, noticing a significant difference in the Sri Lankan audience that there is a higher percentage of adults buying books than the other countries. Therefore, the amount of adult books will be considerably more than the previous years. The panel agreed that Sri Lankans in general read more with over 200,000 attendees just last year, and that Sri Lanka is a highly literate country.
A highlight of this year's Sale will be the Magical Books titles or also known as the Augmented Reality (AR) Books for children. A preschool learning series and bedtime stories that use cutting-edge technology to revolutionise reading for the next generation, allowing children to sing, learn, and read.
