Illegal immigrants rescued by Libyan navy

(MENAFN) Libyan navy rescued almost 500 illegal immigrants in six processes off the country's western coast, as it said on Friday, navy Spokesman Ayob Qassem said that, "Coast guards' patrols, in the past few days, rescued 493 immigrants of different African nationalities in six operations,"

The spokesman said that, the rescue processes occurred north, west and east of the capital Tripoli at different distances, Qassem also said that, the rescued immigrants contain women and children on six rubber boats.

Lots of immigrants, mostly Africans, prefer to cross the Mediterranean Sea heading for European shores by reason of the state of insecurity and disorder that plagued Libya following the 2011 uprising that toppled the late leader Muammar Gaddafi's regime.

Migrant shelters in Libya are full with thousands saved at sea or detained by the Libyan security services, according to the UN Higher Commission of Refugees, 900 immigrants have sank at sea this year up to now, as trying to cross from Libya toward Europe.
