Netanyahu holds talks with outgoing US envoy Greenblatt

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Jerusalem:  Outgoing US Middle East envoy Jason Greenblatt met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday in Jerusalem, Washington's embassy there said, without disclosing the content of their talks.

The brief statement said only that they met at Netanyahu's official residence and were joined by US ambassador to Israel David Friedman and Israel's ambassador to Washington, Ron Dermer.

The Israeli government issued an identical statement, without adding any details.

Greenblatt, one of the key architects of US President Donald Trump's long-delayed Israeli-Palestinian peace plan, announced his resignation on September 5.

One of the aides tapped by the White House to succeed him is Avi Berkowitz, who graduated from Harvard Law School in 2016.

Greenblatt's departure places another question mark over the peace initiative, touted by the White House as the "opportunity of the century".

The plan, roundly rejected in advance by the Palestinians, has yet to see the light of day.

Netanyahu had been due to meet Trump next week on the fringes of the UN General Assembly in New York, but the premier cancelled the trip as he struggles to cling to power after a general election on Tuesday ended in deadlock.

Near-complete official results from the poll published Friday gave ex-military chief Benny Gantz's centrist Blue and White alliance the lead, with 33 out of parliament's 120 seats.

Netanyahu's right-wing Likud won 31 seats, but neither has an obvious path to a majority coalition.
