Milk, egg and honey production up in Brazil

Rio de Janeiro – Brazil saw an increase in milk production and productivity in 2018, as well as a rise in honey and chicken eggs production, and a recovery in shrimp farming.

On the other hand, the number of cattle saw the second decrease in a row after hitting a record high of 218.2 million head of cattle in 2016. The figures are available at the Municipal Livestock Production 2018 (PPM) made public this Friday (20) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics ( IBGE ).

Brazilian milk production reached 33.8 billion liters, up 1.6%, resuming an upward trend after declining 1.1% in 2017.Last week, Egypt announced it opened up for dairies from Brazil .

Brazilian chicken egg production hit a record high last year, reaching 4.4 billion dozen, up 5.4% year-on-year, grossing BRL 14 billion (USD 3 billion). IBGE stressed this is the first time in the historical series that the number of eggs surpassed 4 billion dozen.

Honey production in Brazil reached 42,300 tonnes, up 1.6% year-on-year. Late 2018,Saudi Arabia opened up to import honey from Brazil .

Shrimp production reached 45,800 tonnes last year, up 11.4% year-on-year. In 2017, output had dropped by 21.2% from 2016.

The number of cattle stood at 213.5 million head in 2018, down 0.7% year-on-year. IBGE reported that last year saw an increase in the cattle slaughter and a record-high volume of exported beef.
