Oman- 16 buildings in Muscat governorate get solar power boost

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat -

Muscat Electricity Distribution Company (MEDC) has installed rooftop photovoltaic (PV) solar systems for 16 subscribers. Six of these connections are for residential uses in Muscat governorate, seven for government and others for commercial buildings with the total capacity of more than 2.3MW.

This is part of Oman's ambitious goal of producing 30 per cent of its electricity from renewable energy by 2030.
MEDC expects that such capacity will increase to more than 8MW in the next two years. 'We have received more than 38 applications for deploying solar power systems in the governorate,' MEDC stated.

Launched under the Authority for Electricity Regulation's (AER) renewable energy initiative 'Sahim', the programme seeks wide-scale deployment of small PV systems at residential/commercial premises in Oman.

The programme aims to enable customers to slash their annual electricity bills by around 40 per cent as well as help the country save millions in producing gas-fired electricity.

MEDC said that the total cost of one kilowatt of solar power connection currently ranges from RO300 to RO800. 'We hope that this cost would decrease gradually in the following years with the availability of more manufacturers and the growing efficiency of such panels,' it said.
In this regard, the regulations have been put in place to regulate the process of producing solar rooftop energy that were approved by AER in 2017.
