India- Ensure normalcy is restored in J&K: SC directs Centre


(MENAFN- NewsBytes) Hearing a bunch of petitions pertaining to the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, theSupreme Courton Monday asked the Centre, led byBharatiya Janata Party , to ensure normalcy is restored in the border state.

But the apex court added that this should be done keepingnational securityand safety in mind.

J&K has been under lockdown since August 5.

Defending government, Venugopal reminded of past incidents

Representing the Centre, Attorney GeneralKK Venugopalsaid things have been largely calm in the Valley. He cited the number of deaths in the Valley since 1991 and said "terrible situation" prevailed there.

Referring to the death of Hizbul Mujahideen'sBurhan Waniand the crisis that followed, Venugopal said, "In 2016, when a terrorist was killed, the whole state went into a turmoil."

Meanwhile, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said not one life has been lost in the last few weeks.

After hearing both sides, the bench, headed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi and including Justices SA Bobde and SA Nazeer, said, "We direct Centre to make every endeavor to make sure normal life returns. We ask for restoration to be on a selective basis."

Meanwhile, CJI Gogoi said he might visit J & K

On allegations that litigants are unable to approach the J&K High Court, courtesy restrictions, CJI Gogoi remarked that this is a serious issue.

The bench asked the Chief Justice of the lower court to submit a report in this regard.

Assuring that he will speak to the Chief Justice of HC, CJI Gogoi added, "If the requirement arises, I may visit Jammu and Kashmir."
