In a significant achievement, the Emergency Department at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) provides same level of care and services across all hospitals.

Emergency is the first department which has been corporatised across the HMC network, said Aftab Mohammad Azad, Deputy Chairman, Corporate Emergency Department, HMC, yesterday.

'We have four major emergency departments, which are at the Hamad General Hospital (HGH), Al Wakra Hospital, Al Khor Hospital and Hazm Mebaireek General Hospital. We are providing the same level of care in all hospitals. There are some differences depending on the available sub specialities, but it is considered as one unit and same physicians see patients across the  hospitals. It is one of the biggest achievements, he said speaking during a media tour of the new Trauma and Emergency Center.

The new Trauma and Emergency Center is the largest in the region and marks a significant expansion of trauma and emergency services in Qatar. In addition to a new Emergency Department, it also offers trauma, urgent, and critical care services and features a dedicated ramp for ambulance arrivals at HGH.

'The facility offers a greatly improved patient experience. Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Minister of Public Health H E Dr Hanan Mohamed Al Kuwari and Acting Chief Medical Officer at HMC, Dr Abdulla Al Ansari ,have given a special attention to make sure that the new Trauma and Emergency Center gives the best care to patients, said Dr Aftab.

The ground floor of the new Center is dedicated to walk-in emergencies and the first floor to critical and trauma care patients, the second floor is dedicated to urgent care patients, whilst the third floor has been designed to care for patients requiring isolation or monitoring before being discharged.

'We see around 1,200 to 1,500 patients every day. But most cases may get help from health centres which are essentially not in the scope of services available at the emergency department. But we do not send back patients, said Dr. Aftab. He encouraged public to differentiate between emergency and non-urgent conditions while the seeking services.

'Several health centres provide 24 hours acute care. We request patients to go to health centres if  they have minor complaints. If there is a patient in need of need emergency care they will be transferred to the Emergency Department by an ambulance, said Dr Aftab.

'Due to expanded space and facilities the waiting time for patients is also expected to reduce, said Enaam Saleh Al Naemi, Assistant Executive Director of Nursing, Accident and Emergency at HMC.

'The centre has 256 beds with spacious and mainly private rooms. Patients have an unparalleled level of comfort and can recover in the best healing environment. These all house increased number of state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment including an MRI, ultrasound, and three CT scanners, X-ray and laboratory facilities. The centre also has ten dedicated beds for people with mental health problems.
