H E Dr Ahmed bin Mohammed al Sa'eedi, Minister of Health, on Sunday launched the Travel Medicine Clinics in the primary healthcare institutions.
Speaking on the occasion, H E Dr Sa'eedi emphasised the need to provide therapeutic services to Omani and expat travellers visiting countries with diseases non-existent in the sultanate.
He called upon people to visit healthcare centres in the governorates before travelling. 'They will be informed about the diseases and epidemic in the country of visit in addition to prevention and treatment methods. If any symptom occurs after return, one should visit a healthcare centre for a check-up.'
Dr Said al Lamki, director general of Primary Healthcare, said that the service ensures that primarycare physicians and nurses will provide pre-travel information and service like malaria prophylaxis and immunisations and advice on other risks.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health represented by the Directorate General for Disease Surveillance and Control as well as the Directorate General of Primary Health Care have collaborated to hold a five-day training workshop on the Travel Medicine Service.
The workshop, run by experts from the College of Travel Medicine of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in Glasgow, UK, will train 60 professionals including doctors and nurses in primary healthcare institutions from across the sultanate in the Travel Medicine Service.
The service is designed to enhance national health security by preventing any infectious diseases or outbreaks associated with the travel of Omanis or non-Omanis outside the sultanate and meeting the requirements of joint external assessment and comprehensive healthcare.
