(MENAFN - Khaleej Times) An Emirati daredevil is aiming to conquer the summit of the highest mountain in Europe to raise awareness and funds for children suffering from cancer. Khalifa Al Mazroui has partnered with the UAE's Friends of Cancer Patients (FoCP) organisation and will climb the 5,642-metre Elbrus mountain to support the cause.
The adventurer is known for his dangerous stunts, including exploring the world's biggest underwater cave, called Orda Cave. He's also conquered nearly all the mountains in the UAE and even discovered an ancient cave in Jebel Hafeet, which had 200-year-old human bones inside. On September 3, he will jet off to Southern Russia to climb the Elbrus Mountain, along with a team from UAE Outdoors.
"I started doing adventures many years ago, but this time I decided that I wanted to support kids who are suffering from cancer," Al Mazroui told Khaleej Times. "It's been one of my dreams to do this one and I wanted to support an important cause. I'll also be taking the drawings made by kids with cancer, as well as the UAE flag and the flag of the FoCP. We are taking it to the summit to support the kids. These children have dreams and aspirations for the future - some of them want to be adventurers, they want to be football players or play other sports. I met one child who has leukaemia and he wants to be the best football player in the world."
Dr Sawsan Al Madhi, director-general of the FoCP, said some of the children they look after aspire to be an adventurer like Al Mazroui. "He's an ideal example of how a young Emirati gentleman can have an impact within the UAE and society. He's a leader on social media and what he's doing is very inspirational," she said. "He visited the kids at the hospital and it's given him the drive to do this. He feels linked with those children and he's their role model."
To prepare for this mission, Al Mazroui has been training day and night to ensure he is physically and mentally ready. He's been spending most days with a 35kg bag strapped to his back, including climbing stairs with it and running. He's also doing yoga to strengthen his lungs.
Al Mazroui's journey will be streamed live on social media. The amount raised will be announced once he's back in the UAE.
