Thousands of drunk drivers detained in Sri Lanka


(MENAFN) Police said in a statement on Friday that, more than 10,000 drivers have been detained in Sri Lanka in the past few weeks after police started a special nation-wide process to nab drunk drivers since July 5.


10,054 drivers have been detained from across the country till Friday morning, in the special procedures which saw hundreds of police officers positioned on streets and main roads.


The drunk drivers would be fined with about USD142.94 and police officers who caught the drunk drivers will also be rewarded, as said by Police spokesperson SP Ruwan Gunasekara.


Until now the police had collected over USD1.4 million as fines from those under arrest, road accidents took more than 3,000 lives in Sri Lanka previous year.
