An Omani medical specialist and his team have discovered a fungus in the Netherlands.
The discovery was made by Dr Abdullah bin Mohammed al Hatmi, senior medical laboratories specialist at the Directorate General of Health Services in Dhahirah and his team in the Medical Fungus Center of the University of Amsterdam.
The discovery was made during examination of the genetic material existing in some pulmonary samples of a patient with fungal infection called Fusarium volatile

The sample was sent to a fungus centre in the Netherlands where Dr Hatmi is working as a research fellow as part of the Medical and Research Fellowship Program. 'It was discovered during medical tests on a sample taken from a female patient's lungs, who was initially diagnosed with tuberculosis,' Dr Hatmi said.
'The laboratory diagnosis revealed that the patient had a serious fungal infection. The discovered fungus has been found to be opportunistic and antibiotic-resistant.'
This discovery was published in an international medical journal. Dutch and international media have mentioned about this discovery and the precise diagnosis of communicable diseases. 'I thank His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said and the Ministry of Health for giving me this opportunity to pursue research in the Netherlands.'
Dr Hatmi's research in the field of communicable diseases and microbiology has contributed in many discoveries related to fungi.
