Oman wins bronze in West Asian TT meet

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Oman U12 team bagged a bronze at the recently-concluded West Asian Table Tennis Championship in Amman, Jordan.

Oman defeated UAE 3-1 in the third place playoff match. Earlier, Oman went down narrowly 2-3 to Saudi Arabia in the semifinals.

Oman U12 squad comprised Ahmed al Riyami and Luqman al Farsi and finished second in Group B to reach the last-four stage. The other teams in the group were Syria, Bahrain and Lebanon. Group A comprised hosts Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Palestine and UAE.

Oman also took part in the U15 and U18 categories.

The podium finish comes as a good boost to the sultanate paddlers as Muscat gears up to host the ITTF Junior Circuit Premium Oman Junior & Cadet Open from October 24-28.

In Amman, the other members of Oman age-group teams were Al Mundher al Farsi, Issa al Riyami and Moaz al Shehi. Head coach Mohammed Atoum of Jordan accompanied the team while Mohammed al Jassasi, board member of the Oman Table Tennis Committee, was the head of delegation.

Atoum said, 'We had started our preparations for this championship through internal and external camps over the past few months. All the junior players were involved in an intensive training programme.  The podium finish of U12 team will encourage the players for future tournaments.

'Participation at international tournaments is essential for our players to gain exposure and experience.'
